Overview
In contrast to its name, blue-green algae are not actually algae but a form of bacteria that produce unusual blue-green colored pigments. In fact, another name for blue-green algae is cyanobacteria. Under LED lights, this algae would display a very unique luminous pink color. They grow in both saltwater and some large freshwater lakes. Over several centuries, they have been consumed as food in Mexico and some African countries.
These algae are one of the most nutrient-dense foods (with over 65 vitamins and minerals) on earth, making it a type of SUPERFOOD.
Cultivation
Most blue-green algae products are harvested during summer (June until November) from Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon. The algae is filtered to preserve the most vibrant blooms and then further purified by centrifugation. It is then chilled and sold frozen or dried at low temperatures and sold as powder form.
Natural Compounds
Blue-green algae are made of 70% vegetable protein and contain higher levels of beta-carotene compared to broccoli. As mentioned earlier, this algae is jam-packed with over 65 vitamins and minerals including the complete spectrum of eight essential amino acids as well as ten non-essential amino acids. It is readily absorbed by the body (up to 97% of the beneficial nutrients found in the algae are easily absorbed).
Health Benefits
Due to its high nutrient content, there are many proposed health benefits but more extensive research needs to be done to verify these.
One of the most prominent benefits includes strengthening the immune system and having natural anti-viral properties. The proposed anti-viral mechanism is that the algae would protect cells by creating a “viral firewall” which many viruses are unable to cross instead of directly kill the viruses.
Due to its high concentration of powerful antioxidants, this algae also offers anti-aging and confers positive effects for both hair and skin. Consuming blue-green algae may also help relieve fatigue and improve exercise tolerance (serves as a powerful energy booster) owing to the high nutrients content. Additionally, those with digestive problems find that their issues are greatly improved with blue-green algae consumption as this algae may have a strong detoxifying characteristic and therefore, enables the cleansing of the digestive system. Some people also find that they are more able to cope with daily stress as blue-green algae might have a positive effect on the brain.
*Note that: Choose only products certified free of contamination by microcystins, potentially harmful toxins that the algae sometimes produce. Contaminant-free supplements are generally considered safe, although you should avoid them if you take immunosuppressive medication or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
