NEUROPATHY

NEURO stands for NERVE while PATHY stands for DISEASE. Neuropathy= nerve disease

The pathophysiology of neuropathy is multifactorial and is thought to result from vascular disease.

The prevalence of neuropathy is estimated between 6-51% among adults with diabetes depending on age, duration of diabetes, glucose control, and type 1 versus type 2 diabetes.

What causes neuropathy?

  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Poor dietary supplementations
  • Alcoholism
  • Back injuries
  • Industrial exposure to lead

Sign & Symptoms

  • Tingling  (“pins and needles”) pains in the hands and feet
  • Stabbing/burning pain
  • Extreme sensitivity even  to the slightest touch
  • Cold sensations most of the time
  • Dry, cracked skin due to reduced sweating
  • Muscle cramp/weakness

Untreated neuropathy might lead these complications:

  • Diabetic foot ulcer
  • Gangrene
  • Amputation

Neuropathy Diet

  • 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet)
  • Legumes (black beans, chickpeas, fava beans)
  • High omega-3 fatty acids food (fish, flax seeds, chia seeds)
  • Lean proteins (chicken, turkey)
  • Low-fat or non-fat dairy (milk, yogurt)

Food to Avoid

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Food with high sodium (>2,300mg/day)
  • Food with added sugars and saturated fats

Lifestyle Advices

  • Check your feet- check daily for blisters, cuts or calluses
  • Check your shoes- ensure nothing sharp has pierced the outer sole
  • Avoid very hot baths- put cold water in first then add hot water as extremely hot water might burn you without you feeling it
  • Avoid smoking- smoking affects blood circulation and increase risk of neuropathy

The drug Ivermectin is not a drug for the treatment of COVID-19. Ivermectin is a drug that is used to treat parasitic diseases caused by roundworms. It is also used to treat scabies and some other parasitic infections. COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is not a parasite. Therefore, Ivermectin cannot be used to treat COVID-19.
