Influenza (Flu) — More Than Just a Cold

|
HTM PHARMACY

When someone says, “I just have the flu”, many people think it is the same as catching a bad cold. But the truth is, Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that can become very serious if ignored. As pharmacists, we see many patients underestimate flu symptoms, and we want to help our community stay informed and protected.

How is Flu Different from a Cold?

Both flu and cold affect your nose, throat, and lungs, but there are key differences:

  • Onset: Flu symptoms appear suddenly; cold symptoms usually develop gradually.
  • Fever: Flu often causes high fever (38°C and above); colds rarely do.
  • Fatigue & Body Aches: Flu can make you feel extremely weak and bedridden; colds cause mild tiredness only.
  • Complications: Colds usually get better on their own; flu can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization, or worsen existing health conditions.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Anyone can catch the flu, but it is especially dangerous for:

  • Children below 5 years old
  • Elderly above 65 years old
  • Pregnant women
  • People with chronic illnesses (diabetes, asthma, heart disease, kidney problems)
  • People with weakened immune systems

For these groups, flu is not just uncomfortable, it can be life-threatening.

Why Vaccination Is So Important

The flu virus changes every year, which is why annual vaccination is recommended. A flu shot doesn’t just reduce your risk of getting infected, it also:

  • Makes symptoms milder if you do catch the flu
  • Prevents complications and hospital stays
  • Protects your family and coworkers by reducing spread
  • Contributes to “herd immunity” — fewer infections mean more protection for everyone

Some people believe the flu shot can “give you the flu”. This is a myth. The flu vaccine is made from inactivated (killed) virus or a protein from the virus, it cannot cause flu.

Even with vaccination, good hygiene and healthy habits help lower your risk:

  1. Wash hands regularly with soap and water
  2. Use hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available
  3. Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing
  4. Wear a mask if you’re sick
  5. Avoid close contact with people who are ill
  6. Rest at home if you’re unwell to prevent spreading germs
