What is Acne Vulgaris?
Acne Vulgaris is a common skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with oil, dead skin cells, and dirt. Acne typically appears on the face, forehead, chest, shoulders and upper back as these areas have the most oil glands.
4 major factors contributing to acne include excess sebum production, follicular plugging with sebum & keratinocytes, colonization of follicles by bacteria Cutibacterium acnes, and release of multiple inflammatory mediators.
It is the eighth most prevalent disease worldwide, affecting 85% of young adults aged 12-25 years old.
